Una mañana en los géiseres de El Tatio y las Termas de Puritama

Visitar los géiseres de El Tatio significa madrugar. Los tours pasan a buscar a los turistas en su hotel en San Pedro de Atacama usualmente entre 4:30-5 a.m. Como teníamos carro, el plan era manejar los 79 kilómetros que toma como una hora y medía. La noche anterior habíamos coordinado con un señor y su hijo para ir en caravana. Nos conocimos en el estacionamiento de nuestro hotel Lodge Andino Terrantai.

Antes de irnos a dormir mi mamá llama a nuestro cuarto para decirnos que quería dormir y que fuéramos yo y mi hermana. Para mi mala suerte, en la mañana mi hermana me dijo que no se sentía bien y que fuera sola. Los géiseres de El Tatio son uno de los imperdibles en el desierto de Atacama, así que decidí irme con la familia.

El Tatio viene del kunza “Tata-iu” y significa “el abuelo que llora”

La carretera para ir a los géiseres de El Tatio está en buenas condiciones. Los tour operadores te van a decir que la carretera está en muy mal estado, que era cierto antes, para venderte los tours. Pero puedes manejar por tu cuenta sin ningún problema, sólo debes ir con cuidado. A la ida todo estaba muy oscuro y parece que un carro no vio una curva y terminó metido en agua. Al regreso pudimos ver cuando sacaban el carro.

La realidad es que a la ida no tienes idea que hay a tu alrededor aparte de la carretera porque todo esta muy oscuro. Uno va siguiendo los otros carros que van al mismo destino. Cuando íbamos subiendo veíamos como bajaba la temperatura, hasta que llego a menos 12°C. En los géiseres de El Tatio no hacia tan frío como en algunos sitios en la subida.

La hora del amanecer varia dependiendo de la temporada del año. Antes de fijar tu hora de salida, verifica a que hora es el amanecer y llega justo antes. Nosotros salimos a las 5:30 a.m. del hotel y llegamos justo antes de la 7 a.m. Vimos Venus en el cielo brillando fuertemente antes que saliera el sol.

No importa en que temporada del año vayas, siempre hace frío en el desierto y más a tanta altura. Nosotros fuimos a finales de abril, que es otoño en Chile y llevamos ropa de frío, pero muchos turistas que van en verano no van preparados. En el pueblo puedes comprar cualquiera cosa que se te olvido traer. Yo compre un sombrero tejido que me pareció chistoso y guantes. Vas a necesitar guantes, mis manos estaban heladas y me costaba tomar fotos.

El Tatio tiene 8% de los géiseres del mundo y son los más altos

Cuando llegas a los géiseres de El Tatio vas a sentir la altura al tratar de caminar. Están a 4,230 metros sobre el nivel del mar y son los más altos del mundo (junto con Sol de Mañana en Bolivia). Los hoteles en San Pedro de Atacama ofrecen té de coca que ayuda con la altura y también tiene cafeína que ayuda con la manejada. También puedes pedirle a tu hotel que te prepare algo para llevar. Yo lleve un sandwich y una banana que fue perfecto.

Los géiseres de El Tatio son el tercer grupo de géiseres más grande del mundo, después de Yellowstone, en Estados Unidos y la reserva natural Kronotski, en Rusia. Son los más grandes del hemisferio sur. Llegan a tener erupciones de hasta 80 centímetros en sus 80 géiseres. Cuando fui pensé que las erupciones iban a ser más altas, algo así como gran chorros de agua.

No se te ocurra tocar el agua de los géiseres

La mayor actividad geotérmica se da con el frío, por eso debes ir tan temprano. Hay algo de seguridad alrededor de los géiseres pero no mucho, usualmente sólo es un circulo de rocas. Es importante que no te acerques mucho a ellos y que NO toques el agua. En el pueblo nos contaron algunas historias de turistas tontos que no hicieron caso y se quemaron vivos. Si buscas online puedes ver que las historias son ciertas.

El último caso fue una turista Belga que trataba de tomar una foto (por favor no tomen selfies en este lugar) y se cayo en un géiser. Aún que pudieran tratar las quemaduras, demora más de 2 horas llegar al hospital más cercano en Calama.

Cuando vas caminando por los géiseres vas a ver salidas de vapor de la tierra que se notan más cuando esta oscuro. Hacen formas únicas y son interesantes para fotografiar. El vapor está compuesto de dióxido de carbono y sulfuro de hidrógeno. La temperatura oscila entre 48.3–91.6 °C (118.9–196.9 °F).

En el 2016, las comunidades indígenas de Toconce y Caspana, que administran el lugar, subieron el costo de la entrada a 5,000 CLP ($7.65). Esto lo hicieron para mejorar las instalaciones que ahora cuentan con baños y senderos.

Agregue a su visita un baño en las Termas de Puritama

Puedes bañarte en aguas termales en los géiseres de El Tatio. Decidimos ir a las Termas de Puritama porque habíamos escuchado que eran más bonitas. Manejamos de regreso (están a 35 kilómetros de San Pedro), pudiendo apreciar los hermosos paisajes que estaban oscuros a nuestro ascenso. Este es un buen lugar para la observación de aves y paramos un par de veces en el camino para tomar fotos en los pantanos.

Manejamos hasta las Termas de Puritama pero llegamos muy temprano y nos toco esperar hasta que abrieran el sitio a las 9 a.m. Puedes ir en dos tantas, de 9 a.m. a 1:30 p.m. que cuesta 15,000 CLP ($22.95) o de 2:00 p.m. a 6:30 p.m. que cuesta 9,000 CLP ($13.77). Los sábados y domingos cuesta 15,000 CLP todo el día. La entrada es un poco costosa, pero el sitio es chico, así que seria incomodo si hubiese demasiadas personas.

El estacionamiento está en la parte superior y debes bajar caminando como unos 8-12 minutos. Es mejor llevar todo lo que necesites para no tener que regresar al carro. Las Termas de Puritama tiene locker, vestidores y ducha, así que puedes dejar tus cosas sin problema. También tienen un pequeño kiosko donde venden agua y algunas otras bebidas.

Las Termas de Puritama son un conjunto de ocho pozos con temperatura de 33.5°c. Están conectados por pasarelas rojas de madera en medio del desierto. Se encuentran a 3,475 metros sobre el nivel del mar. El paisaje a su alrededor es muy virgen y está cubierto de vegetación que brinda privacidad. Hay una zona VIP con fuente para los huéspedes de Alto Atacama Desert Lodge & Spa, un hotel muy lujoso en San Pedro de Atacama.

Visiting El Tatio geysers means getting up early. You can go on your own or take a tour to El Tatio geysers

The road to go to El Tatio geysers is in good condition. Tour operators will tell you that the road is in a very bad state, which was true before, to sell you the tours. But you can drive on your own without any problem, you just have to be careful. On the way there everything was very dark and it seems that a car did not see a curve and ended up in water. On the way back we could see when they took out the car.

The reality is that on the way there you have no idea what is around you apart from the road because everything is very dark. One is following the other cars that go to the same destination. When we went up we saw how the temperature dropped, until it reached minus 12 ° C. In El Tatio geysers it was not as cold as in some places on the road.

The sunrise time varies depending on the season of the year. Before setting your departure time, check what time sunrise is and arrive just before. We left at 5:30 a.m. from the hotel and we arrived just before 7 a.m. We saw Venus in the sky shining brightly before the sun rose.

No matter what season of the year you go, it is always cold in the desert and more considering the altitude. We went at the end of April, which is autumn in Chile and we took warm clothes, but many tourists who go in summer are not prepared. In town you can buy anything you forgot to bring. I bought a knitted hat that seemed funny and gloves. You’re going to need gloves, my hands were freezing and I had trouble taking pictures.

When I went I thought the eruptions were going to be higher, something like big water jets.

The greatest geothermal activity occurs with the cold, that’s why you should go so early. There is some security around geysers but not much, usually it is just a circle of rocks. It is important that you do not get too close to them and that you DO NOT touch the water. In the town they told us some stories of silly tourists who ignored this and were burned alive. If you search online you can see that the stories are true.

The last case was a Belgian tourist who tried to take a picture (please do not take selfies in this place) and fell into a geyser. Even if they could treat the burns, it takes more than 2 hours to get to the nearest hospital in Calama.

When you walk through the geysers you will see steam outlets from the earth that are most noticeable when it is dark. They make unique shapes and are interesting to photograph. The vapor is composed of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. The temperature ranges from 48.3–91.6 ° C (118.9–196.9 ° F).

Add a bath in the Puritama Hot Springs to your visit

You can bathe in hot springs in El Tatio geysers. We decided to go to the Puritama Hot Springs because we had heard that they were prettier. We drove back (they are 35 kilometers from San Pedro), being able to appreciate the beautiful landscapes that were dark on our way over. This is a good place for bird watching and we stopped a couple of times on the way to take pictures in the swamps.

We drove to the Puritama Hot Springs but we arrived very early and we had to wait until the site opened at 9 a.m. You can go in two time frames, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. which costs 15,000 CLP ($22.95) or 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. which costs 9,000 CLP ($13.77). On Saturdays and Sundays it costs CLP 15,000 all day. Admission is a bit expensive, but the site is small, so it would be uncomfortable if there were too many people.

The parking lot is at the top and you should walk down for about 8-12 minutes. It is better to take everything you need to avoid having to return to the car. Las Termas de Puritama has locker, dressing rooms and shower, so you can leave your things without problem. They also have a small kiosk where they sell water and some other drinks.

The Puritama Hot Springs are a set of eight wells with a temperature of 33.5 ° c. which are connected by red wooden walkways in the middle of the desert. They are located 3,475 meters above sea level. The landscape around it is very virgin and is covered with vegetation that provides privacy.
